Left 4 Dead 2

Simplicity
Kyle's Review of "Simplicity" - 4/5
Creative and shockingly immersive despite some tedium. 4/5 stars.

Simplicity nails a minimalist aesthetic while also making impossible environments seem believable in context. What I loved most was the side story told through safe room graffiti. I was genuinely into it despite its... well, simplicity. A campaign's ending cutscene has never warmed my heart more!

Gameplay is a mixed bag, though. It's a fair challenge due to low resources, even on Easy, but the maps are sluggish. The level design is too expansive and you're often walking forward with nothing to do, either through a large empty space or a long maze. MULTIPLE mazes in one campaign feels excessive.

There are still gameplay highlights, particularly in the "Escher room," but the poor NPC navigation spoils the fun without 4 players. Bots will often get stuck, fall off ledges, and ignore medkits.

Despite my griping, the campaign flows smoothly enough, and the narrative elements bring this campaign from 3 stars to 4 stars.
