She seems to feel temperature the other way around and mixes up colors as well.

Hmmmmmm. I like the idea but what begs the idea is how she can shift through forms. Hats obviously but how did she obtain these hats of power? I like your idea of the childhood problem and disability. but maybe something more supernatural and sinister happened. Who knows. Anyone else wanna take a guess?
