Yes, the alpha and the pre-alpha are the actual dark and griddy ones, beta in the other hand Isn't. Alpha is for example the SIGGRAPH demo and beta is the playable version from the 2003 leak which is closer to the retail release in terms of aesthetics, beta even has very similar map layouts to the retail but the maps are unfinished. We should be saying Half-Life 2 alpha was dark and griddy.
