Anemoia - (backrooms)
Beta 9 Aug @ 10:24pm
My rating with facts to back it up: 10/10 (No Backrooms fanboy-ism).
T;DR: It's a really well made, dedicated, well worked and well programmed L4D2 campaign based on the Backrooms (Wiki version, mostly), with a bit of touch of Kane's aesthetics here and there, overall it's a amazing campaign to play both in singleplayer and with friends. It's filled with details and map scripts that will surprise anyone willing to go along with the experience.

Totally recommend, the only spoiler I'll kinda give away is there are *some* jumpscares but without the ear raping loud noises we are all used to, as a jumpscare hater I gotta say, these were very well made with good taste, not the FNAF levels of jumpscares we are all used to.

The only problem I personally have was the famous "Out of free edicts" crash error because of too much stuff in the game at once (that's mostly 99.9% my fault because I use too many mods), but a bro on the workshop made a "Reduced Entities" addon to it and it worked wonders, I played the campaign with this addon active and had no problems.

My personal opinion along with irrefutable facts:

Without going all fanboy over this and that, let me say this, the Source games has the best visual aesthetics to go along with the Backrooms themes and vice-versa, it's even better when someone actually takes the time to also add more assets in the campaign to make it even more unique, a good example are Roku's Resident Evil campaigns You, the author of this campaign did an amazing job on selecting/making the assets you added everywhere, they don't feel too much "Source-like" and not out of place for being too HD or too low resolution, that part you did incredibly well! Also props to you for adding stuffs we see in those YT videos about dreamcore/backrooms/weirdcore, my personal favorites were those happy/sad baloons and of course, Kitty itself! The only thing on the top of my head that you also can add in the Remaster are the angels, the eyes with wings things from weirdcore, they as NPCs, like Kitty, somewhere on the levels or even on a separate level on the Remaster would be beyond incredible, like what you did with the Kitty helping you survive the entities.

Overal ambiance and map design looks, feels and passes all the necessary right vibes of any Backrooms map alongside Weirdcore/Dreamcore, being them the silly ones or the most serious/horror-like levels we all know and love. It's really something that, when someone makes a game map, in this case a L4D2 map, any angle of 95% of the maps can become a wallpaper and generally a good photo (this is called photography in movie making if I'm not mistaken). In my honest opinion, aside from the obvious overly dark areas, most areas are amazingly designed with unique looks for each of their respective levels. Congratulations, you didn't needed to, but you did either way!

The maps themselves are another great work of art and programming, the only campaign I ever saw with actual multiple routes were The Hive(Resident Evil), and I never though I would see someone having the patience to actually do something like that again. I loved it and you did a great job to make it actually work! Specially for the fact that most maps are multi-levels instead of just a long one each time, makes the player (who care about the effort of the author anyways) wounder around feeling like they are really exploring the actual Backrooms where anything can happen, instead of a more "video-game-ey" feeling of each stage one level at a time, great choice of design!

The audio and ambiances were actually something I also though it wasn't gonna be added but again I was glad to be wrong! Idk if its my game or my audio but I found them a bit low on the volume but hey, better lower than a mess of audio pollution if you ask me, so good decision on that as well because it adds as a subtle ambience not a "forced" ambiance like on what we have on Roku's Resident Evil maps has, don't get me wrong, they are perfect, but sometimes you just wanna blast the in-game music instead of the map's ambiance/music so it's, again, a very good choice to leave for the player to choose what he wants to hear.
The songs and ambiances you choose were fitting for the Wiki's Backroom version imo, I personally rather Kane Pixel's overall aesthetics and songs but hey, its great nonetheless and I appreciate when someone does things right both artistically and going well with gampleay overall, specially when going with a pre-determined aesthetic.

The multiple [REDACTED] things you made on the maps was incredibly clever, I was glad they were in all maps and not just a do-and-forget thing, is very immersive to the overall Backrooms [REDACTED] theme that all of the levels have in common one way or another, I loved how subtly these were along the way and sometimes I truly, honest to God, though I was mad or didn't noticed something until I remembered this kind of thing is totally possible on Source maps. Really subtle and really well programmed man, cheers, I owe you some beer because of those. (Not going into the details not to ruin the actual horror/mental experience of players who didn't experienced them, but when they do, they will know what I'm talking about hehe). The word I'm redacting is a overly used word on the SCP universe, it has to do with physical space, for those who read and wonders what I'm talking about

As of today Its an easy 10 out of 10 campaign, and don't let any hater or false "critic" fool ya because so far we only had survival maps to this one compare it with, and lets be honest, yours wins easily and by a Astronomical Unit of difference in quality and dedication.

I noticed you commented will be Remastering it? Any and all things can be upgraded and made better sure, but regardless, for being the actual first full length Backrooms campaign you did the best job any mapper could had done, if not better...because, well, no one made anything better so far so the Medal goes to you! It really felt like an exploration on the Backrooms with the L4D chaotic zombie chaos, it's a one of a kind (so far) experience!

As I mentioned before, the only real problem I had was the "No_free_edicts" crash error but that can either be solved with less active mods and/or with the addon I mentioned above, so that doesn't count as a negative. But if you are willing, please try to work around this on the Remaster, if you want it of course, that can be easily solved on our side whenever.

10/10, would buy you beer if we meet.

This campaign stands alongside with Dr. Anubis's Crash Bandicoot (2020), Roku's Resident Evil campaigns, The Hive and Questionable Ethics in the matter of quality, dedication, vibe/ambiance and overall results as a L4D2 campaing. There are other amazing campaigns out there but what I mean is the actually unique campaigns, not with the classic L4D action pack and linear themes, which also has a ton of amazing campaigns on its own right.

______________________________ End of Review.

Anyone not agreeing this isn't a 10/10 other than the author himself (because only he knows what he could had done better) is a complete fool for not doing their best to enjoy this experience this brother set out to do, its your personal loss, unless you don't like the Backrooms...if that's the case why are you still here?...just to suffer...? Go enjoy your life with something you actually like. And if you honest to God thinks this is a mid campaign, help the brother out with honest sincere opinions instead of hate and fake criticism without point out the good and right things he did.

The review is intended for the author's eyes only and I'm not debating anyone or falling into the mental trap of "nah man, its not that good because..." bull__t. We all went there and we all (hopefully) learned how stupid this mentality is because 1) so called "critics" never do anything better or even decent in their lives and want to just diminish what people do with effort, time and dedication and 2) let's be honest, this mentality of "nah bruh, it's not so good because..." is a lie because people, in fact, do incredible things, it's not the author's fault they can't please every single person's opinions and tastes. Some things are just incredible as they are, if you take the time to lean how to enjoy them you won't regret it, but if you don't, it's your personal loss at the end of the day. We all should just learn some people out there have the patience and effort we lack to do what we envision in our minds, period.

I can't say Iook perfectly everywhere but I was hoping for a Crab Rave reference or at least a room filled with them dancing or at least moving: https://youtu.be/Floy3Yvdfyw?si=jW08v2p72K49Iybt

I stand by my review and will replay this a lot more eventually and I could be wrong that there isn't one, but if there isn't a Crab Rave reference then I stand corrected and this is a 0/10 campaign.

Joking, but seriously, where is the Crab Rave man??
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review. It truly means a lot to me to see that you not only enjoyed the map, but also noticed the little details and atmosphere I worked hard to create. Feedback like yours really motivates me to keep improving and creating more content :JoyfulGreckel::JoyfulGreckel::JoyfulGreckel::JoyfulGreckel::JoyfulGreckel: I gladly accept that beer, bro!

I’ll keep those things in mind for Anemoia 2 — it’s going to be more dreamcore/weirdcore. About Crab Rave, there’s a small reference to it in Chapter 4 at the arcades, and actually, it helps you against a Tank!

That was the intention brother, gonna be totally honest with you as I was on the review, I'm f__ng tired of the hipocrates never giving a 10 out of 10 when it's deserving and on this case it is fully deserving of a (G)olden 10/10 rating, that was my intention, as I said I never get the patience to learn how to map or at the very least give it a try so seeing someone like you coming out with a banger like this campaign fully deserve the truth instead of someone holding back. Of course, preferences are preferences, but as a hard work of art that you made, objectively speaking, it's incredible!

Hard working folks like you are the ones that makes the world spin in a good way, thanks for everything you did brother, God bless you, you deserve everything good coming at you an even more! Lots of people may not post reviews or do a full run down of why they loved it but to anyone that at the very least enjoys anything related to the Backrooms or Dream/Weirdcore can instantly love this campaign, specially if they go out of their way to use the right mods with it!

Thanks man, much appreciated that you will keep this in mind, really kind of you ^^

About the crabs...brooooooooooo really?! Amazing! xD...so far I had replayed it 3 times from start to finish and I'm still noticing some new stuffs and paths I haven't done yet but this one I haven't found yet, gonna take my time this time to find it :D

Glad my review cheered you up because your campaign, and now your time to had replied to me now, also cheered me a lot! :steamhappy: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy seeing this kinds of work of art being realized, specially with this level of dedication!

Cheers brother, the hype for Anemoia 2 is real over here for me and with my buddies, they also loved the campaign!

Btw, about the executable, bro, you didn't had to go that further mile and you went! I only found that today...took me a couple of runs to understand what you did on [Redacted]. Allthough I could not finish it yet because I got stuck on the dark void part, still trying to figure it out, idk if I need to wait it out or just keep going...but holy molly man I wasn't expecting that level of deication more than of what I had seen...incredible!

Btw, I really... R E A L L Y don't wanna be one of those kind of people in this workshop that goes the full 'tard mode of "DO THIS NOW, NOW DO THIS!!OBEY SLAVE!!C'MON SLACKER!!" because I find that really disrespectful to the authors of mods...but hey man, if you want another opinion/idea of mine:

If you also can, or is willing to, actually make even more NPCs like you did the ones in [REDACTED] that actually move and interact with the map and the players with all of the other ones from the Backrooms/Dreamcore from example Kitty , the bacteria from Kane's Complex, the smileys being actual enemies instead of just "cutscenes" (although the way you handle it the first time it was incredible don't get me wrong!!) along the way it will be beyond the idea of incredible.

Some examples that are crossing my mind atm:

On the Crash Bandicoot 2020 campaing (not the older one from 2013, but the one from 2020), there is a box that you can get the mask's invulnerability and that area of effect of it kills commons that come across you, if you can pick that script/line of command/idk what the f__k that is that make that works like that and put on...say, Kitty or other characters from the multiple lores you can actually make him help you during a special event fight on a chapter, for example he being able to move around the map to do a certain task, even though in a simple way, and having that script on it can help players on a dire situation, like a long map with low resources, making the players having to rely on his presence or something like that.

The smileys and other malicious entities being actual enemies that you can shoot, kill or having their own 3d models, again back to the Crash Bandicoot 2020, that campaing made actual enemies out of a very creative (and honestly, very cool looking models despite of their simplicity lol. Making actual enemies with weak points or straight out invulnerabilities or tactics you need to think at the spot not to die in a desperate moment would be also great additions, like you did with the tanks to make the famous chasing scenes from the Backrooms(great touch at the finale chapter btw...when I noticed what was happening I cannot describe the joy I had of that realization that you were able to replicate that with perfect precision on L4D2 LMAO!).

Since you said the next one will be more focused on Dreamcore aesthetics, Idk if this may interest you but you could add also some songs along the way, here are some great playlists I found some time ago:

https://youtu.be/jUsUUQHgNR0?si=TicL0ot57xBWyl4B

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muBwQas3_-U

Some of these songs added on the maps, at least imo, would add a lot to the ambiance, if you don't plan on doing this hey, at least I hope these songs help inspire you on your work and give you a good time at least :))

Cheers mate, really nice meeting you and again I'm honored that you replied to me and better yet was happy with my review!

One last thing, if you want to please take a moment to check the "Recommended mods" list I made for your campaign! I hope you like/approve of them, I don't know if you took the time to play with themed mods on your own campaign but if you didn't I hope this gives you some fun time on it later, plus I really want to know what you think of the list too! I also hope that list gives the people reading all of this a really great themed gameplay on your campaign, I may not have the skills or patience and time to add or help with your work but what I can add to make it better I will try to!

I know I'm talking a lot but one last thing... really thankful you didn't relied on sound-based jumpscares...you have no clue how I loved this and...quite honestly, makes this stands out like a hidden gem among all of the backrooms related things.

Don't get me wrong, a good jumpscare done right is priceless and eternally in-memorial for all of us, like what Kane Pixels did in his first movie with the Bacteria moment, but not relying on the screaming stuff...man...perfection.
