Before starting up the map. (In the map selection menu, like playing sandbox selecting a map.)

-On TOP RIGHT there's a box should says "Single Player". Click the "Single Player" and there be options like 2 players, 4 players something like that.

-That makes a multiplayer mode, but is only "steam invite only", now you start the map you're in the game playing online but alone or invite friends.

Good luck.
-If you have the [contents] installed (Textures and playable map for this gamemode.) Not all maps are playable.
