What I don't like is the fact the archers spawn in such volume that you have to fight them from afar or force them into a bottleneck otherwise people start dropping like flies because of how precise they are. Even when you do the two things I mentioned its still very difficulty especially when you have to worry about other troops coming at you.
Completely agree - They just eliminate any threat and challenge to survival.
Stronger Captains and some cav waves on the open maps would be a good balance start for more challenge.
