Something that can get grating over time is hearing the same sound effect repeatedly with zero variance. One of the ways the Original Doom noticed and mitigated this is to make each shot fired change in pitch at random. The range of the random pitch doesn't have to be a large amount, just a subtle touch will go a long way to make the audio seem to sing and break up monotony.
