Spooky, inspired, and polarizing. 3/5 stars.

The Evil Within is a campaign that's too ambitious for its own good, for better and for worse. I haven't played the original game yet, but thankfully you can still enjoy this as a standalone experience without too much confusion. The atmosphere is thick and occasionally eerie thanks to decent visuals, and there are lots of memorable moments, particularly the mini-boss fight and the final boss in the campaign's finale. Not everything works perfectly, but I was able to see past the jank and appreciate the creativity.

That said, some aspects here might ruin the whole campaign for less patient players — instant death traps, mandatory puzzles, enemy NPCs with guns, and the aforementioned boss fights. Bot navigation is also fairly buggy and the path forward is sometimes unclear, so this is definitely a mod best enjoyed with friends.

I still had fun despite these issues because this mod is so unique, but prepare for a bumpy ride if you try it out.
