1.7 Ship Combat Balancing (old)
Vermillion posted this on the Empyrion Reddit and I wanted to copy it here for clarification. Please feel free to quote or link to this post if anyone has questions about this.

Per Vermillion:

"First, I cannot divulge anything coming in 1.7 that pertains to new mechanics and features due to an NDA.

Second, I am not balancing this around Spanj. I watch many streamers and get many videos of people playing RE.

Third, the "spinny-spinny ship" meta as spanj calls it is not a viable or even accepted gameplay method. It is first and foremost A CHEAT. You may not agree with that, but it is.

Spinning/corkscrewing/rouge-rolling your ship does nothing related to dodging or evading fire. What you're doing is moving in an irregular direction while spinning. The AI track targets and predict the current direction of movement. By spinning and moving the AI turrets predict the next location as if all the targets are moving outward due to the spin + directional movement. There's enough overcompensation by the turrets that perhaps 5% of a turret's weapons will hit a ship in a more or less random location by chance. Irrelevant when you have a shield that absorbs that minimal damage.

Additionally, you're not MEANT to beat a Tovera solo in 5 minutes. Using that as a baseline requirement for a good ship is a no-no. Same thing for the Eradicator. They are (currently) the ultimate endgame bosses for their factions, they're not supposed to be beatable without tremendous planning and a half-hour or more long fight, or a group of players.

**What will be changed includes:**Turret rotation speed will be reduced to provide an advantage to fast ships that aren't spinning.Weapon damage vs hull types will be adjusted to provide greater protection for heavier armors.Reduced Repair Costs via station services for heavier hull blocks.New turret types (HV, SV, CV, BA, Zirax and Legacy)New fixed weapons (SV and CV)New shield damage groups based on quality of the shield generator instead of type.[6 additional Classified points]

It's altogether possible that these changes won't even make a noticeable difference. It's possible that the opposite will occur and the spinning ship meta will be made stronger. At which point i'll give up on it and go back to adjusting the game balance for the normal players playing the game as it's intended.

What RE is balanced towards is normal ships. The pretty, sleek, aesthetically-pleasing sci-fi ships that people buy this game to build and fly. I've been moving away from those to stomp down on the horrible min-max spin ships for the last few versions at the loss of all the new players."
