About the Katana...
So, it does 33 damage. A military knife does more than that. So does the upgraded Staff and the Golden Swordfish (which has the same moveset). Can the Katana be upgraded at all, or is the Katana, despite being an Epic quality weapon, relegated to being trash in a display case?

Im going to go with trash. It looks cool and has the highest range out of all of the melee weapons you listed but it does not stand up to damage. I always go golden swordfish because it does 1 more point of melee damage to players than the staff, has 3.6 range instead of the staff's 3.5, and takes up one less slot in the inventory.

I agree with you for the positives it has. How exactly did you figure out the range though?

I just went pouring around in its .dat files that it downloads. The Katana has a range of 4.5. The military knife and the katana both deal 25 resource damage (trees) while the staff and gold swordfish only deal 10

And of course, if you want to deal resource damage, the Drill is probably the best, since it works on both trees and boulders.

Since the main wiki doesn't have any of the new items, I've spent a lot of time looking through the game files checking out stats of new things i find. I also saw that Elver uses overrides which means skins for items don't work so the katana can't even look that cool.
