That you can call the functions described from anywhere.
You could use api.util.getBuildVersion() to determine what version was running and then call the appropriate block of code.
It also strikes me that one or the other of the variables involved should be nil, so you might be able to check that.
I've run into one other mod so far that has similar crash, which I had to roll back to a 35049-era mod version: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1924672173. Dunno if it's same event tho, in that case it crashed when I tried to enable ambient occlusion in the graphic settings.
