The HWT's original submission for the HDF's CQB weapon competition, the first model of the Cougar, saw some use during the Martian Campaign of 2304, by the HDF’s commandos, as well as the Martian partisans. However, the polymer furniture was prone to cracking, even breaking, in the low temperatures and rough terrain of Mars. The high rate of fire (1100 rpm) often made the Cougar inaccurate and uncontrollable when continuously fired. The 2-round burst mode often caused the gun to jam. In response to feedback provided by (surviving) HDF troops, HWT changed the polymer body to a traditional Grade 38 Titanium Alloy one for added strength. The weight of the bolt was increased to reduce the rate of fire to a more controllable 900 rpm. The carrying handle was replaced with a MIL-STD-1913 rail interface, a piece of technology learnt from the Terrans, for mounting a variety of sights.
