Conquering cities
In vanilla it's quite easy to conquer cities. Just build an encampment 2 hexes away and/or level up a siege weapon for range 3 and after a few turns defence and health are down (as long as you aren't too far behind in science) and you can easily take the city with a melee unit.

In Anno Domini I'm now in mid game and I'm seriously struggling to take cities. The enemy cities have a defence of ~100. I built a catapult, upgraded to ballista and set it in an encampment. But it barely scratches the city's surface. I was able to bring down defence in a lot of turns but totally fail in bringing down health.
I also tried building an upgraded elephant which got eliminated in it's first attack against the city, again hardly doing any damage.

So what is the intended way to conquer? Do I have to train masses of units and swarm them? That would be quite expensive.

Or am I overlooking some tech, civic or strategy?

I have found that rams and siege towers are the key to taking cities with walls here. :)

That's actually a good point. In vanilla I never use them as I rely on siege weapons (or archers in early game). Thanks!

So...is it a case of me needing to increase the strength of the siege weapons? As I mentioned in the main discussion, as a player I'm a builder, not a warmonger...so I've not seen the issues you guys have and really appreciate your comments.

Well, currently siegt weapons are quite useless as they're too weak compared to city defense. My suggestion would be to raise siege unit damage and introduce a 3rd upgrade.

In vanilla you have:
  1. Catapult (Medieval), 35
  2. Bombard (Renaissance), 55
  3. Artilley (Modern), 80
  4. Rocket Artillery (Information), 95
The number is bombard strength.

For Anno Domini I'd do something like:
  1. Catapult (2nd era), 35
  2. Ballista (4th era), 60
  3. Onager/Trebuchet, (6th era), 85
The numbers should be tested though.
And I'd think about switching Catapult and Ballistra. As far as I understand the Catapult was the stronger siege weapon and created later.

Thanks a lot for the info...I'll try what you've suggested and make sure it's in by the next upload.

Fine.

Is there some way I could easily set up and test some situations?
