where did this originate from?
was this the original concept of badlands for tf2 or is it something else?

Exactly. It's based off concept art from a former Senior Environment Artist from Valve. Someone had posted the link to the portfolio in this thread, but they deleted their comment for some reason.

This Badlands 2006 map was just released recently, it wasn't available to play in 2013...unless I've gotten confused and am misunderstanding which map you played. And that's definitely possible.
Are there more maps like this?
