Left 4 Dead 2

Fairfield Terror - Part 1/2
Kyle's Review of "Fairfield Terror" - 4/5
A loving beta tribute. 4/5 stars.

Fairfield Terror is a recreation of the pre-release version of No Mercy, warts and all. It's mostly the same campaign gameplay-wise apart from some minor layout changes, but the visuals and reused HL2 assets give it a surprisingly different feel. It has a grimy, old school vibe — beta content is always dark and gritty, after all.

Aesthetics are the main draw here, and the attention to detail is great. This is a true remaster that captures the unpolished spirit of the original while adding new enhancements that weren't feasible in 2008, like high resolution shadows.

However, the lack of polish goes beyond the visuals. I had issues with getting stuck in place, bots hurting themselves near ladders and poor Francis falling out of the rescue vehicle. This is technically an unfinished campaign, and it made me appreciate how much smoother No Mercy is to play thanks to tiny changes.

Nitpicks aside, this is a playable piece of history that succeeds where it counts.
