Anglo-Saxon Units
Any ideas on how to make the Anglo-Saxon Units unique

The Anglo-Saxons should be the most heavily armoured faction and unlock pretty good armour earlier on than the rest of the factions.

Skirmishers and bows shouldn't be very good, neither should their horsemen, but their infantry should lead the way.

Possibly a higher defence than other factions but less good at attacking than the Picts or Gaels.

As at least half of the AS factions in this period are still pagan and the rest are newly converted it would be cool to see a unit or units which are dedicated to the old gods and fill similar roles as the bereserkers in the base game. Such as "Spears of Woden" or "Swords of Tiw".
Small unit size but extreme moral bonuses and scare ability. Or maybe this would make a good specialty unit for the the king killer himself, pagan King Penda.

Northumbria could have a special mounted thegn unit since they were known to fight on horseback. While the rest of the AS factions would only have mounted scouts.

The Saxon factions such as West Seaxe, East Seaxe, and Suth Seaxe, (maybe not Hwicce as they are a Brythonic-Saxon mix) could have specialty seax units which are superior to the seax units of the Anglian factions and Jutish faction (Kent).

Kent because of it's political and geographical proximity to the Frankish kingdoms, and it's long history of marriage aliances with the Frankish kingdoms could have access to Frankish Mercenaries. Perhaps Franks who are still using the Francisca axe.

As for the rest of the units, there wouldnt't be any long axes as that was a Danish import. Infact the use of axes at all is probably limited the poor ceorls who had to use carpentry tools in place of weapons. The same could be said for bows as those were mostly used for hunting, and limited to use by the ceorls in battle and would probably be a very poor unit. Skirmishers could be pretty good as almost all AS units in this period would have at least one javelin to throw before melee. This could be represented with decent javelin men for the AS factions. And as I mentioned earlier the use of cavalry was almost unknown except by the Northumbrians perhaps because of their exposure to the northern Welsh who had a long tradition of mounted combat.

Overall, the AS kingdoms were dependent on heavily armourned and well equiped thengs and hearthgaurds who would fight to the death for their king or earldorman their ring-giver. The rest would be the freemen (ceorls) who were called upon to defend their lands and who probably only had a spear and or seax with a shield.

What I may do to create a sort of mounted infantry aspect to cavalry is to make them full sized but not good at mounted combat, allowing for the player to have a quick infantry unit. The A.I would not have them as they would not use them correctly.

Yeah that could work! Especially if they could hold their own when dismounted. Not sure how possible it is though, I've only just started learning modding.

Units have seperate dismounted combat stats so very easy to make. Have done it before but hope to make it better this time.

I've made a whole historically based period correct Anglo-Saxon roster with custom units if you want to collab
If you need inspiration, read or listen to The Bernicia Chronicles. Outstanding books set in exactly this period with no real magic, and no dragons and monsters.
If you research their armor, you will see that the better off warriors sported some pretty fantastic looking helms and armor. So the look of them will be pretty easy and awesome to distinguish.

I like how you gave the Anglo-Saxons some blondes, be nice if you gave them more blondes and some Redheads.I think it would look cool if you make their shields more colorful as well.
