1. It would be cool if Charlie had some sort of ability that represents her omnipresence in darkness, like a teleport that works at night that costs nightmare fuel, or the ability to appear behind players or mobs that are in complete darkness.
2. Maybe she can have some sort of special interaction with shadow creatures, like the ability to command them for as long as her sanity is not 0, but as long as shes doing it she has a heavy sanity drain, or maybe she can even take as many hits as she wants from them and it only hurts sanity, until sanity is at 0 then she takes damage.
3. This is more of a skill tree idea, but it would be awesome to have some type of compatibility with maxwell like being able to buff his minions or lessen the sanity cost of spells when nearby, I am not sure exactly what could be done but I like the idea of Maxwell and Charlie working well together
4. Something to Spice up her nightmare form would be desirable, as a 1.75x damage multiplier is not even all that huge when you have characters like Wolfgang, wanda, maxwell with shadows, woodie moose form, etc. Maybe she can have a little planar damage and defense or a special huge damage attack that starts with the well known darkness sound effect thing
Hey @AlexanderTheGreat625,
These are some fantastic ideas! Seriously, you've hit on the exact same points I was thinking about. I love this mod's concept, but I always felt that Charlie was a bit underpowered compared to characters like Wolfgang, or even a fully skilled-up Wilson. Her core identity was interesting but didn't have the mechanics to back it up.
Your post inspired me to share what I've been working on in my own personal fork of this mod. I've integrated several new systems that align almost perfectly with your suggestions, with the goal of turning her into a true Shadow Mage with a high skill ceiling.
[] Reworked Teleportation (Your Idea #1!): I completely reworked her mobility based on your idea of omnipresence in darkness. She now has a "Soul Hop" ability with two variations:
[] Daytime: She can teleport, but it costs Souls, just like Wortox. This makes daytime travel a calculated choice.- Nighttime/Caves: This is where she shines. Local (short-distance) Soul Hops are completely free while she's in her shadow form, costing nothing. For global map-wide teleports, she can either pay with a large number of Souls OR, if she has none, she can pay with her Sanity. A cross-map jump without souls can cost her up to 150 Sanity, instantly driving her insane. It's the ultimate high-risk, high-reward mobility tool.
[] New Insanity Mechanics: To make insanity a manageable state rather than just a penalty, she now has the "ShadowDominance" tag.
[] Insanity-spawned Shadow Creatures are no longer hostile to her unless she attacks them first.- However, if her sanity hits absolute zero, she suffers heavy penalties: 3x hunger drain and a constant health drain. This forces the player to hover on the edge of madness, but not fall completely into it.
[] True Shadow Command (Your Idea #2!): This is the crown jewel. I plan to make Shadow Creatures her allies.
[] The mechanic is designed to be very skill-based: as long as her sanity is precisely between 1 and 40, any Shadow Creatures that spawn will be friendly and fight for her.- If her sanity goes above 40, she loses control. If it drops to 0, they remain allies, but she starts suffering the harsh hunger and health drain penalties. This creates an intense gameplay loop of actively managing your sanity to maintain your shadow army.
My vision is to address your fourth point not by simply increasing her damage multiplier, but by giving her a completely new way to play. Instead of being a weak brawler, she becomes a master of map control, risk management, and shadow magic.
Thanks again for the great suggestions! It's awesome to see others with the same vision for what Charlie could be.
