The cinema gamemode (and Source Engine) use the client-server[en.wikipedia.org] networking model. Theater playback state is managed on the server host and is networked to clients. However, the theater screen you see in your game is essentially a browser window on your machine. The only thing the server is sending to you is the time to synchronize the video.
