Search For The Jackal -Part 7- Finale (Far Cry 2 Homage)
Search For The Jackal campaign review/improvement suggestions (Spoilers!):
(Steam don't like deep analyses so had to create this as discussion)

So, played the campaign alone and at current state... let's just say I think there's lot of room for some improvements:

All missions/ many missions:
+ Sometimes a possiblity to complete some objectives stealtly (assuming it was purpos as in FC2 you are also able to stealth some missions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dtF08FR25I )

- PCML missle and sometimes 3x 40mm granadelauncher rounds in McKay's packback even tough he dosen't have missle launcher??

- No dialogue with team-members at all
You have 3 men mercenary team whom we don't know anything about than they are hunting "the Jackal" but WHY? What's their goal for it, money?
or to remove Jackal from leading gun-runner postion?
or lower the conflict in the area? (Tough that wouldn't make a sense why they would be mercenaries; UNLESS they are funded secretly by UN BUT then again they are fearing CIA so it removes that possibility of them...)

But back to team-members without any kind of story withthem player's intrest of them or their fates dosen't exist for long.

- No cutscenes
I admit I don't create co-op missions so I'm not sure how well they work with each human player when played in co-op but without any cutscenes story is very, very blank and weak.

1st mission:
- Well, like I already talked how there's no much of dialogue I expected that in start of campaign they would be some dialogue but none, and not even music in the moment that player experets and later remembers as "start of Search For The Jackal-campaign".

2nd mission:
- When ordered to clear the enemy camp one of the soldiers was in the plantfield, don't take this personally but placing a needle in haystack and ordering player to find is.... not very enjoyable (if there's none soldier placed there then never mind of this critigue, just my bad luck then that enemy soldier decided to hide there).

- I see you placed some trails on rail but because they are not set as simple objects in editor they jump out of railroads because ArmA-objects don't like anything that isn't flat unless you change them to work as simple objects (easy to fix with just few ticks to the boxes in Eden-editor).

7th mission:

+ Custom music

* In the mission's Steam Workshop you talk how you have planned 4-5 different variations for the final mission, prehaps giving player a choice how to perform last mission would be very welcome and would raise this mission's again through playing value manyfold.

And heck, you could make it so that certain ways are only available IF player have completed certain objectives stealthly like collected first intel in 7th mission stealthly (like I did) or killed 1st mission target stealthly (like I did) etc.

And even if you lack intrest/ skill to script the campaign so that it would load m.7A or m.7B version automatically just put in the CfgDebriefing description = "To stay in your decisions/actions play next mission 7 B-version.";

Summary:
"A campaign with promising milieu but without much of dialogues or cutscenes at all the story loses it intrest very effectively and easily in it's current state. 2/5"

(Sorry for late response, found this just today)

Alright, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I never expected anyone to analyze these scenarios and expect something more than some crappy scenarios that vaguely represent something in the style of Far Cry, but you really took the time to do this, and I appriciate it.

The feedback you gave me does make sence and is not out of line, but actual constructive critisism. Again, thank you.

Since I would call myself a novice in the eden editor, stuff like cutscenes and more in-depth dialogue was out of the question first (ep 1 was originally for personal use), but when i advanced as an editor, I should've updated the older missions. Scripting is still a slight mystery to me, but I've looked into it and I do want to improve my skills.

Then the story. The idea I had (which I never put to words in the briefings or tasks) was that the mercs were hired by a private company that made major losses due to the civil war and wants an end to the conflict ASAP. Their idea of ending the conflict is stopping the biggest source of guns coming into the country, thus the Jackal becamomes their target. As you probably realized, this campign happends right before FarCry 2 in an alternate universe depending on if the player manages to take the Jackal out in the end FarCry 2 happends The 'fear' of the CIA is to represent the questionable nature of US mercenaries in foreign countries (even though CIA does/have done this too to a long extent) and referring to the cold war (with the nationalists and kommunists, as USA usually supported the side opposing the communists due to the fear of communism spreading)

Anyway, I really appriciate your feedback and when I get free time (currently quite busy and stressed out) I will work on past missions to improve them.

One more thing: Since I lack/ed the competence to create advanced dialogue and cutscenes to missions, I planned to do a part 6.5, where the squad walks through a destroyed Gerogetown after the milita has "clenced" the place from UWLA supporters. It was a bloody mess, but I didn't post it due to lack of a response of the creator of the soundtrack i used in it. And since he was just an independent artist, I didn't feel like "stealing" his work to my mission even if I credited him.The soundtrack in question is crucial to the missin though, thus it most propably won't be posted withouth premission from the guy.

The idea of different scenarios regarding which tasks were completed in earlier missions has passed my mind earlier, but was quite quickly discarded with the amount of work, research and understanding regarding scripting (which I also earlier stated I lack).

The varioations of pt 7 are very, very different from the part I did (eg one was a sabotage & rescue mission with NVGs and silenced MP5s) this was maby a bit too high tech for the theme of the campign, so I scrapped the idea, with an almost finished scenario. The rest of the varioations are of similiar sort, being scrapped due to a lack of connections to the plot or simply lack of being able to make the gameplay itself enjoyable with the current state of the variations.

But I do have a few lying around that could make great varioations to pt 7, but as I earlier stated, it will take a while before I can get them done and the required scripting figured out.

(Sorry for the spam), but I just remembered an issue regarding the conversations between the mercs. When I tested these scenarios before publishing, I always played with one friend, leaving one merc (usually O'Connor) left out, since we didn't want the AI to ruin our fun by engading everyone before we were ready and being a 'third wheel' to command and micro manage. And since all three characters are so different regarding equipment and supported playstyle, it can't be controlled who is left out (if anyone). Since most people playing as pairs most probably leave the third merc out, this would (as far as I am aware of how conversations work, even scripted ones) mean that most probably some lines would never be said, as the character who sais them, wouldn't be there. This issue is eliminated in SP, as you can't play without the AI, but since I created these scenarios with CO-COP on mind, this is a real issue.

If you have an idea how I could fix or go around this issue, feel free to share it with me. Thanks :steamhappy:

I example use this we I want to find the camera spots:

When I click with left key I get cordinates and then add them to example intro_cutscene.sqf making cutscenes in sqf look like this.

so use [] exec "camera.sqs"; and left click to select your own camera positions.

The cordinates are from my upcoming campaign so use [] exec "camera.sqs"; and left click to select your own camera positions.

Guestion:
How long civil war has continued? Year, half year?


Anyway here we have 1st cutscene as written, now just to make it actual cutscene in INTRO-section:

(First cutscene camera village, full of dead civilians, camera moves to road full of dead soldiers and militants and destroyed cars. Then camera moves to town where fight has ended for militant victory and they are massacre remaining goverment soldiers behind church where militants as final victim kill a officer.)

(Camera moves to full picture of this city which have many places flaming.)

["PMC Leader","Civil war has been going on XX months. People die from left and right no matter are you armed or not."] call BIS_fnc_showSubtitle;

(Camera points from behind of Jackal who is watching the town where massacre is going on from hill, helicopter can be seen landed from corner of the scene.)

Well why not try some else music on background? Wouldn't 'Back in Stratis' or 'Alcatraz (A)' work also you describe of the scene?

Nah, I disagree. MP5SD6 is in Far Cry 2, so none can't say it would be too out of Far Cry 2.

I don't know how you planned this mission but prehaps first phase of this mission would be break in inside military FOB where player would steal the NVG's?

Well three options comes from my mind:

1) Guide in mission briefings not to remove third charter of the mission or some of the dialogues might be lost.

2) Release SP and CO-OP versions seperately.

3) Release 2p CO-OP and 3p CO-OP versions seperately.

Hey I started ArmA editing back in OPF:CWC 7 years ago and this weekend is going to be first time I release a full lenght campaign on internet so no worries if you are just ready to read and test out A LOT scripts and your missions. There's no lootboxes or microtransactions giving anyone advantage of learning how to make missions, only the biggest determination affects in this sport.
