If the file location and reference are correct, maybe it's something about the file. Do you have a _cm and -ng?
cm is color/metal with alpha channel controlling metallicity and rgb channels as the image
ng is the normal/gloss where the alpha channel controls gloss and the rgb channels are a normal map. If you don't want metallicity or gloss, you still need the alpha channels for the texture to work.
I am fairly sure the textures need to be square so that's something to double check.
Also check to make sure you're generating mipmaps when you export your textures to dds.
