Bussard Ramscoop/Hydrogen Collector (Drag!)

Beskrivelse
Summary
Need to gather fuel in an emergency?
Phoenix Manufacturing has you covered again!

THIS IS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS!
Values WILL change based on feedback.

Bussard Ramscoops
Warp to the 22nd century with the newest technology: Bussard Ramscoops!

Place these on your ship (facing the direction of travel!), and they will gather hydrogen as you move. Maximum collection rate is determined by the maximum speed limit of the world. The faster you go, the more you collect!
The sun and atmosphere have no effect on the rate (atmospheric effects might be added later, if possible).

They will lose effectiveness the further away they face from the direction of travel, keep this in mind when placing them!
You must keep moving! They won't work if you don't move.

Creative mode: They will just supply hydrogen regardless of speed or angle in creative mode.

Hydrogen Collector
Just place these in view of the sun, and it will collect free hydrogen from the vacuum of space.

Current power consumption and production stats of collector match the Oxygen farm. Changes will be made based on feedback.

DX9 & DX11 supported.

FAQs
Q: Help! It's not working.
A: Make sure you are in survival first. Next, it only produces hydrogen. It does not produce oxygen. Make sure you have a tank with enough free volume.

Current Features
  • Collection dynamic based on speed and angle of scoop to direction of travel
  • Full construction and LOD models
Planned
  • Emissives
  • Large ramscoop for large ships
  • Boost collection rate in atmosphere
  • Adjust balance
  • Upgrades

Does it collect ice only, or does it act as an O2/Hydrogen Generator as well?

I was able to find it on my site, just use the search function if necessary.

No Longer works. Does not show up in blocks list and generates errors.

love the concept, don't we have gas giants now in SE? I think i saw them when i went through a list of planets to add to my playthrough. If we get like a Hydron gas giant and a ramscope only able to collect there then those gas giants have a purpose as the solar gas station hrhr and a different way than just mining for ice. If there is a sweet spot in collection, not too fast not too slow, then this could become a gameloop i suppose, maybe not the most thrilling one, but just wait for those reavers while collecting gas ^^

@Bluestar33 technically there is some science behind it. Questionable though if it would be economically viable at non-relativistic speeds, or outside atmosphere or nebulae. Ramscoop is pretty established tech in many close to reality SF universes.
General plausible idea here has two premises:
1. there is no true void - even between galaxies there can be some rogue atoms, much more inside solar systems
2. hydrogen is most common atom for the most of universe's lifetime
Based on that, if you fly around (or keep still and look at the star that will bombard you with solar winds), you can find a way to gather the atoms that are coming your way.

How does it work scientifically? Is it at least scientific?

does it still work it seems like it doesnt it justs takes ice from my ship and converts it like an h2 o2 gen

Haven't tested it myself, but interested in putting it on my server. How much hydrogen would you generate from a small/large ship with 100% efficiency going at 100m/s?

Would the Ramscoop work if I attach them to a rotor to make them spin?
Blu 17. apr. 2021 kl. 15:16
At 100m/s limit is it able to create enough ice to sustain replenish o2 for a one or two engineers in cockpit? or is it only viable in worlds with heightened speed limits?
