This mod works great for detecting asteroids. To avoid lag I use a narrow beam. I have all but the front set to 1m. I also have the sensor disable itself as soon as it detects asteroids, as well trigger a timer.

Do long range sensors still produce as much lag if they are tuned to only asteroids for instance?

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest this on a public server. Private is/should be fine, since you're only dealing with a few known members.

WARNING: Large ranges can induce large amounts of lag. Use at your own risk!
