In the early 2010s, China's railway passenger service speed increase and line electrification efforts progressed simultaneously. Locomotive manufacturers launched research and development of passenger locomotives capable of speeds of 160 km/h and above to meet the growing demand for rapid interprovincial passenger transport. In 2013, Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. launched the HXD1D electric locomotive, a six-axle, near-high-speed mainline passenger locomotive with a continuous power output of 7,200 kW and a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h. It combines strong traction capacity with excellent high-speed performance. Its design draws on the successful experience of existing domestic passenger locomotives and features optimizations in power electronics, control systems, and carbody structure, ensuring stability and efficiency during long-distance, high-speed operation.

After entering production, the HXD1D quickly entered service on major mainline passenger routes in southern and northwestern China. Thanks to its ability to adapt to diverse power supply conditions and complex line environments, it has become a staple in many railway bureau locomotive depots, often used to pull express and high-speed passenger trains reaching speeds of 160 km/h. With its high reliability, good riding experience and economy, the Harmony Electric 1D has performed well in operation and has accumulated a high ownership across the country, becoming one of the important pillar locomotives for China's current mainline passenger transport.

Belonging to the Wuchang South Locomotive Depot under the Wuhan Railway Bureau, this unit features a front paint scheme, double coupling sockets at both ends of the body, and some handrails that differ from those found on later mass-produced models.

HXD1D Electric locomotive No.1898‘Zhou Enlai’
Belonging to the Shanghai Locomotive Depot under the Shanghai Railway Bureau, this is the fourth-generation "Zhou Enlai" named locomotive. It features a bronze relief plaque of Zhou Enlai and has its end paint scheme changed from gray to blue.
