Description
1.9.x hotfix released now! This fixes the AI's chances of taking decisions and using journals.
Please report any bugs in the comments

The industrial revolution has brought grand new inventions to our world… however man has spawned a deadly new infection, and it threatens to destroy the world.

This mod adds a zombie apocalypse to Victoria 3. Will your country survive? Or will it burn with the world around it?

  • An apocalypse designer journal to modify the apocalypse to your playstyle;
  • Zombies which can spread from state to state;
  • Zombie hordes can form, with temporary -but devastating- effects;
  • Manage the containment via a new journals entry;
  • Mitigate the effects of outbreak if when the containment fails
  • Make the decision to put your country into a quarantine to stop the spread;
  • Lose control over affected states, and watch as super powers collapse;
  • Rebuild and recolonise lost or depopulated regions;
  • Includes an Easter egg for kiwi zombie fans;
  • And more!

More content is planned in the coming months - watch this space!
How do I start the infection?
The start-up event will allow you to open the apocalypse designer journal. Use this journal to toggle various settings, including when and where the infection will start, whether states can be lost, and the infection's length.

The infection will then start according to the settings in the journal.
How does the infection's spread work?
Once discovered, you will either be able to start the initial containment effort.

The containment will fail if the zombie-points outweigh the containment-points. The main containment points will come from improving health and police institutions, as well as increasing military wages. Zombie points can come from the settings set in the apocalypse designer journal and random events. Buttons in the journal allow you to start more containment efforts, and can allow you to quickly change laws to aid the response.

If the containment fails, the infection will spread through the country. It can spread to other countries via land borders or through open ports. If a country is experiencing an outbreak then you can take a decision to close both your and your subjects' ports. This will slow the spread to your country.

Each country will get one chance at containment when the infection reaches them. After that - the zombies get a free-for-all buffet of pops.

Hordes may appear in states with sufficient population and terrain type (hordes won't appear in the Amazon or the Sahara, for example).

States which lose enough population can become unincorporated and then decentralised nations, and will be free-game for re-colonisation after the infection dies down.
Compatibility:
This mod overwrites the game's 'on_harvest_condition_started_in_country' code. Other mods which have done the same may not be 100% compatible... and users may receive heaps of 'harvest condition started' notifications as the infection spreads.
Localisation:
Some players have kindly translated the mod to their local languages! See below:

Ukrainian by godofburrito
Chinese by 牛奶大魔王
Vietnamese by Louis

Thank you heaps to the above creators for making the translations :)

Next Update:
This mod is currently in development. If you notice any bugs, please report them in the discussion forum below.

The next update will come after the 1.9 game update. Some things I'm currently working on include:
  • A new, more natural, way for the disease to be discovered (more in-line with the game's Spanish Flu journals);
  • A new journal for you to design the disease (think Plague Inc.). You can mutate the disease and cause all sorts of symptoms, or you can try find a cure for it instead;
  • The zombies will be their own country, so you can use your armies against them;
  • 3D models for zombies, including army models for the map;

No AI has been used in the creation of this mod

Guts and Blackpowder in Victoria 3.

I have a few suggestions that I think could improve this a lot, as I find over time especially if the population went too low the country enters an unrecoverable state.

⏺ First I'd suggest adding an effect, 'scavenging', which would heavily decrease expected standard of living and boost food security.

⏺ Second radicals should decrease in the aftermath, having a revolution shouldn't exactly be on the mind of most survivors. Maybe also add a massive loss of literacy as survivors would be primarily inclined to favour personal survival.

⏺ Third I've noticed Gold Fields and Gold Mines currently mess the game up, they'll just immediately abandon any other job for it causing any country with them to be stuck in endless starvation. Mayb e a negative to gold fields and gold mines of -100% output for a long period afterwards.

Don't forget you could use is_decaying with some of these, so that maybe at first it's easier for survivors to find still edible food.

i feel that having a national guard would be benifitial to containing the infection

also is there a discord for this mod?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The next update probably won't come out until the next DLC so I can use the new culture features for the zombie country

How do I see the infection of the world?

this mod is good it works as a zombie mod, it just lacks much needed flavor after a nation get the zombie infection, the events you do get seem to do nothing to stop or slow down the zombie, the only this it does it give you minor bonus, with the only other problem being the military mostly useless, as it only base on funding and not size type or units, minor nitpick but i do not like the start date i think every ten years would be better. this mod does work as a zombie mod and i do enjoy it for it , it just lacking

Just my two cents - if a state becomes infected and has a releasable in-game tag, perhaps AI could prioritise releasing that tag as a subject after some time has passed, rather than immediately becoming decentralised tag.

This would better represent regional/state/provincial/colonial governments attempting to handle the zombie crisis on their own. Thanks to in-game unrest, they’d eventually break free from their former overlord anyway - just in a more gradual, organic way and richer world-building. For reference, I did tried this in an observer game and it works beautifully.

Another idea that might help performance is implementing a “Zombie Survivor” decentralised tag consolidation for split states. For example, you shouldn’t end up with 2+ separate decentralised Guyana, Jujuy, or Mato Grosso tags just because the region was previously divided between two countries before the zombie invasion. Perhaps a monthly on_action script could auto-merge these into a single entity.

I found this mod disappointing. You fight the zombies not with your military but through your country "settings" such as your military wages, hospital levels, and police presence. I first thought this was only for "containing the infection" but this continues as you fight the zombies. Now don't get me wrong. It appeared that having my military in vicinity of a region under attack by zombies with the area set as a strategic target greatly helped but not once did my military ever fight zombies directly for me. I would only lose regions to zombies over and over again until it ended.

Now, I did a whole lot better than the rest of the world but the mod was very different than my expectations. I look forward to further updates and will keep my eyes on it. I hope to see in the future our ability to fight zombies directly with our armies and also news reports when major cities or countries fall to the zombie menace! :dos2skull:
