Ao Oni

Ao Oni is a big, slow, heavyweight setup grappler. With big slow attacks, multiple command grabs, and relentless tenacity, Ao Oni is a beast who can decimate his opponents. He has multiple stage articles he can place to help him setup his deadly Ao Oni Buster!


Throws a closet in an arc, you can use directional input to control the trajectory. The closet will trap enemies it hits while flying. If it lands without catching a target, the doors open up and ANY PLAYER can be knocked inside it. If the closet falls off stage with a player in it, the player will be freed and not KOd.


Places a cuddly boi in front of you. Press Fspecial again to send him charging in that direction. If Fuwatti catches an enemy, he'll chomp them and send them flying back to you, making them easy prey for strong attacks or DSpecial. Be careful, Fuwatti can be damaged by attacks, but doing so leaves an indelible mark of shame on the opponent's very being. You monster.


A fairly standard recovery move that lifts you slowly up. You can act out of it without going into pratfall. Once you release the satellite oni, it flies above you as a weak projectile.


A slow, deadly command grab with one hit of soft armor during startup. While weaker and shorter ranged than attacks like Warlock Punch, Ao Oni has multiple tools at his disposal to make landing this easier. You can use this move for onicides, but you die first so don't do this on your final stock!


Dives directly towards the ground, gaining super armor while you bury underground. You can move left or right while underground, and will quickly pop back up, damaging enemies as you emerge.


Several of Ao Oni's moves– namely Jab, Nair, and Dash attack– swallow the opponent whole and provide a small amount of healing to Ao Oni. Jab 3 and Nair Landing can be immediately cancelled into any tilt for an instant follow up too!

Ao Oni can also superjump by holding crouch for a few frames before jumping! This provides him with one hit of super armor on the way up– good for getting out of a tight spot or hitting airborne foes.

Dair is a soft spike on the way down, and while you can't cancel it, it ends automatically after a while so you're safe to use it off stage if you're high enough. But if you REALLY want to spike opponents, UAir's late hitbox is a hard spike with a deadly angle. You hear that The Jank? If you're reading this, spike with UAir, got it? :D

Is this a horror jam entry?
Sadly no, I started working on him shortly before Horror Jam was announced. If I’d known, I would have held off on making him.

Was this made to celebrate the Ao Oni remaster?
No, actually! The remaster was a surprise drop shortly after Ao Oni started development! Totally a sign that I should keep going, though! I also never heard of Pillar Chase before I started working on this.

Why is he so caked up?
Because it’s funny and also because it’s canon.
