Sd.Kfz. 221 [Germany] (UNLISTED DUE TO COPYRIGHT ISSUES)

The Leichter Panzerspähwagen (MG), more commonly known by its inventory designation Sd.Kfz. 221, was one of three light armored scout cars that was developed using the same shared chassis as a replacement for earlier Kfz.13 and Kfz.14. A relic of the interwar period when reconnaissance vehicles armed only with machine guns and without any kind of radio equipment were still considered to be a norm, Sd.Kfz. 221 was intended to be the most common among the three variants/

Its combat debut during the Invasion of Poland has proven that machine-gun equipped armored vehicles were not that useful against an opponent who has armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons at their disposal. Its compact design, where commander also performs the role of a gunner due to limited space in the turret, was also its main design flaw, as commander was overburdened with responsibilities. All of this combined led to the cancellation of machine gun-equipped armored car series in 1940, with only Sd.Kfz. 222 and Sd.Kfz. 223 remaining in production until the end of the war.

The remaining Sd.Kfz. 221 were later retrofitted with radio stations, as well as much bigger 2.8cm anti-tank rifles in an attempt to keep them relevant.

A total of 361 of Sd.Kfz. 221 was produced from 1935 to 1940, including the ones that were later exported to China and other nations.

  • 2-man crew: driver and machine gunner (gunner's head is exposed to gunfire)
  • A single 7.92mm machine gun with a 50-round drum.
