Pop-up Duel

Description
I've updated this after nearly 4 years. The mod now includes some scripting and pre-setup to make playing more automatic and true to the original. I've also included the promo cards from Quickhand413's mod here as well.

What the mod can do now -
- It can create a random deck including or excluding any colour of cards you want. I find that in these type of games where you have to build your own deck, this is the biggest barrier to entry for new players. But hopefully now new players can just play with random decks to learn and have fun this way. The mod does not include the promo cards by default, please add these manually if you wish to play with them.

- It will automatically deal out cards when you start the game and automatically play cards when both players have choosen. Now with the mod, you can fairly choose who goes first the same as the original game, and it even includes a 20 second timer for every turn.

- It will automatically grab the appropriate colour crystal when you start the next turn.

- There is a button to line up the the crystals that you have in the event you have to manually destroy any.

What the mod cannot do now -
- It can not do any actual battle calculations. This means after the cards have been played you have to manually determine how much damage is dealt, what statuses are applied, if any crystals are destroyed, etc.

- It can not keep functioning if you undo. Sorry to say but undoing bricks the mod and will not let you continue from where it left off. Please be careful not to make mistakes when manipulating your crystals, or to fix them without the use of undo.

In summary, you will never have to move a card manually during gameplay, but you will have to manipulate your HP by yourself and you will have to manipulate your crystals for cards that destroy or convert them.

Overall, I hope the experience when playing Pop-up Duel increases by a large amount with this lua script and encourage more players for this game!

Thanks to CHRY's Gems! mod where I got the crystal models from and MrStump for his lua guide on Steam.

----------------------------------------

The card game from the Final Fantasy Fables series.

Includes 122 cards from the DS title, Chocobo Tales.

How to play:

Setup -
1) Each player has a deck of 15 cards.

2) Each player draws 3 cards. Note that you can see the colour of your opponent's cards, which can be helpful in deciding which card you want to play.

3) Each player starts with 20 HP.

Turns -
1) Select which card you wish to play from your hand, and when you are both ready, the cards are played simutaneously. (In the normal game, the player who selects their card first will act first. It is difficult to simulate this while remaining fair, so make your own rules on how to decide who attacks first, such as coin flip)

2) After deciding which player acts first, look at that player's card. There are four zones on each card; red, blue, yellow, and green. A zone can be occupied with either a sword or a shield, or it can be empty.
- If the card has a sword in one of its zones, then it attempts to attack. To find out if the attack is successful, look at the same colour zone on the opponent's card. If that zone is unoccupied, the attack is successful, and all damage and effects on your card are immediately applied to the opponent. If that zone has a shield, then the attack is not successful, and nothing happens. If that zone has a sword, then the attack is successful, but all damage is halved (rounded down). All effects still apply immediately.
- If the card has no swords in its zones, then it does not attempt to attack.
Once the first card has acted, then the second card will act. Note that if the first card applied an effect, then that effect is active during the second card's action.

3) After both cards have acted, each player gets a crystal of the same colour as the card they played. Grey cards do not produce crystals.

4) Both cards get moved to the discard pile, then both players draw 1 card. If there are no more cards left in the deck to draw, then shuffle the discard pile and it becomes the deck.

5) The game ends when a player's HP reaches 0.

Things to keep in mind:

- Crystals are needed for some cards to act. If you do not have the necessary crystals for a card to act, you may still play it, but it may not do damage or use its effects. (It can still defend or half the damage taken)

- Crystals are not consumed when using a crystal ability.

- A player can only have a max of 10 crystals at a time. If you would gain more than 10, then the oldest crystal gets destroyed and replaced with the new one.

- A player's HP can not go above 20. If it would be healed over 20, then it simply stays as 20.

- Some cards only do damage and activate its effects when they successfully defend. Pay attention to the symbol next to the card text to know which cards these are.

- A deck can not contain duplicates of the same card. Cards such as Fireblast and Fireblast+ are considered different cards, it is okay to put both in.

Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't realize until a whole day after posting how rude my previous comment must've read. I'm terribly, terribly sorry. Please allow me to rephrase in a way closer to what I intended.
"I love pop-up duels! It looks like something in the script is broken, however. Do you have any plans for fixing it? If not, would you mind if I took a look?"

I don't have any plans on updating this so you can do what you want.

Hi, when I take a crystal, the game says it can't load the model.

i love this game thank you so much for modding it into TTS!!! one minor complaint though... the japanese translations from quickhand's mod, specifically the ones for the 5 gilgamesh cards, are labelled by number rather than by color making it a hassle to keep all of the effects straight... if you could take a moment to change that it would be much appreciated but if not then oh well i guess i can live with it since its pretty minor afterall

Ohh my God! This was my favorite part of Chocobo Tales and I miss it so much. Will there be a scriped version eventually?

I've created an addon that adds the 5 promotional cards to the game, as well as translations for the Gilgamesh cards, the gray Typhon, and the Japanese Gungnir+, the url is http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=625932952

Nivek, have you played the Pop Up Duel in Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon? Has a few more cards to it and a sort of gap stop between shield and sword which is SPEAR.
SPEAR counters Shield but is in turn countered by Sword.

Awesome game, I sometimes host servers for this and change the game to fit up to 8 players, and it's a hit all around. If you could work on getting some of the english promo cards and some of the cards from chocobo's dungeon for the wii that'd make it all the better. 4.8/5
