Description and history of the building :

Architect: Louis SIMON.
Address: District of Pontaillac in Royan, Charente-Maritime, France
Date of construction: 1953
Program: living room + 3 bedrooms + deskroom + studio

This villa, located at the corner of the avenues of Pontaillac and Clémence Isaure, is part of the typology of urban villas of which it reveals some of the characteristics. Its layout takes up the alignment of the streets and thus maintains the parallelism with the beach. Its set back facade allows the ground floor to extend into a vast platform. By creating a base on which to sit the dwelling, the architect eliminates the nuisances coming from the street. The floor slab, folded twice, successively creates the party wall and the roof terrace. The latter, cantilevered above the terrace, is held up by an imposing concrete pile around which the spiral staircase leading to the first floor winds. This spiral justifies the projection made in the corner of the mass and undoubtedly reinforces the presence of the crossroads. It allows outdoor access to a fine passageway-balcony offered to the bedrooms of the house. Its second facade, moreover more watertight, reveals an imposing stairwell through a monumental claustra. This project, which uses an original plastic game, testifies to the mastery with which Louis Simon practiced his art.
