The lost monoliths of British Rail. These concrete beasts could be found at almost every major steam shed in the land, now only one remains, located at Carnforth Steamtown. Carnforth coaling tower however is in disrepair, and nothing can be done to help the aging and crumbling concrete, so it is simply being left to fall down on its own, which is due very soon judging by the condition of the structure. Its sad to think these were a vital part of railway infrastructure in steam times, most being left into dieselisation and left to rot alongside the very things they were built for; and now none have been preserved, and with Carnforth due to leave us soon, all that will be left are photos and memories of these very important structures.
