Conceptualized in 1899,the M1911 was designed in the early 1900's,the pistol was meant to replace all the old American revolvers and pistols of the past century.In WW2,it became one of the most produced guns (with almost 2 million built),and it was known for it's hardness and stopping power.It was used in all theatres by American troops and more countries

It's literally how it was taught to be shot, even during WW2 pistol training favored one handed shooting on the move (although two handed shooting was the way of shooting while still "competition like"). Until some years after WW2 the modern way of holding pistols didn't become mainstream
