In level four "Gates of Hell" at one point you should find an extremely tiny lava golem, if you shoot and kill it, a big lava golem will spawn on the lava lake and will spawn smaller lava golems when killed. It even has the old explosion sounds from the HD.

wait the lava golems are in SS$? I've beat the game 3 times and haven't seen it.
