British Rail Class 85 / AL5

The British Rail Class 85s were a class of 40 25kV/6320V AC locomotives built for the newly electrified West Coast Mainline between 1961 and 1964. They were initially fitted with dual pantographs, though these were removed in time and air reserves were fitted instead. They were capable of dual voltage running, as 6320V was planned to be used in areas of the WCML that didnt have clearances large enough for 25kV AC. The transformer coils could be run in parallel for 6320V, or in series for 25kV, later the controls for these were locked, as the 6320V plan was scrapped, so there was no need to run the coils in parallel. One member of the class remains, 85006 / 85101, owned by AC Locomotives Group, and stored at Barrow Hill along with its fellow surviving members of the ALs. At Barrow Hill it was repainted into Railfreight Distribution in 2003, a livery which it had never worn in service, ACLG plans to return her to running order, and eventually see 85101 returned to service on the mainline.
