The Tree

Alders are a common member of the birch family found extensively across the northern hemisphere. I modeled a relatively generic sampling of them to try and capture the variety found internationally, but I used the red alder of the Pacific Northwest as my main point of reference. These can pretty easily stand in for similar birch or ash trees.

These deciduous trees live fast, short lives, and their fire resistance makes them good natural firebreaks. They quickly populate rivers and wetlands, although some varieties can thrive in drier biomes as well.

Introduction

This is a pack of 10 trees and 1 stump.

These started as an attempt to update my old Hardwood tree pack, which I wasn't particularly happy with. However, the original pack had so many issues that bothered me that the "updates" eventually bore little resemblance to their predecessor, so I decided to fork them into their own pack. The only thing remaining is the leaves I used to make the original texture.

After enough time studying the best work of MrMaison and Pdelmo, and more than a few blender files in the trash bin, I think I finally had a bit of a eureka moment that finally allowed me to create some deciduous trees that feel worth including alongside my conifers. You can expect more deciduous trees from me in the future, now.

Technical

- All 11 assets in the pack share a single 512 x 1024 texture. The Loading Screen Mod should eliminate the vast majority of functional RAM requirement for this pack.

- Tri counts are low-ish for trees of these sizes. Only the chonkiest tree breaks 1k, with most of the others hovering around 400 - 700. Performance in CSL is a slippery target but anecdotally I've found these to be some of my less taxing trees.

- I did NOT alter tree sway on these assets. Based on my experience with the previous packs, I now recommend using the Tree Movement Control mod to reduce sway, which can eliminate sway on LODs as well, and doubles for random tree rotation.

- Tree LOD Fix is critical as always, and the larger trees may warrant Ultimate Level of Detail and/or Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance.

These Alder trees are perfect for decorating wetland areas on my PNW themed maps! Thank you so much!

@Groostav - I think this is something to do with the density parameters of forest brush. I haven't played the game in a couple years though so I don't think I can give great advice on how to work with the brush.

@Greyflame Big fan, you make great assets! Now I will complain: It seems like trees have a kind of "bounding region" where it wont draw other trees when using forest brush. Is this set by you or by forest brush itself?

Any idea how I can get a brush with the smaller alders to give me more density?

The "Alder 06 17m Prop" is missing ...

I used BOB to replace the vanilla alder tree with this and it looks so much better, thanks!

@Araucária I just saw one of these for the first time a few weeks ago! I have a huge asset creation backlog to work through but I'll try to get to it when I can, it's such a distinct tree

Please, could you make an asset of Araucaria Angustifolia (Pinheiro-do-Paraná)? It's a beautiful and ornamental tree, and symbol of my state kkkk thanks for your atention.
