While chiefly a freight railroad, the EP&E also ran two named passenger trains for much of its life. The first, the Lake Whatcom Limited, began in 1895 and ran between Bellingham and Sedro. It was followed by the Cascades Cannonball in 1911, connecting Bellingham, Sumas, and Glacier. It was for these trains that the railroad ordered a small fleet of steel heavyweights. They arrived in 1912 and relegated the line's wood passenger cars to less prestigious trains. These cars bore the same green-and-white paint scheme of their wood predecessors, and carried the scheme as late as the 1940s. The scheme even influenced that of the first diesels the line acquired in 1948.
