Kalashnikov himself went from an SMG to an assault rifle, but by the time he made that the StG had already been a thing for years (and the USSR had captured some) It's kinda funny too how Hitler is the one that made up the term assault rifle, and then the Soviets made it worldwide, but instead of basing theirs on the StG, they made a simpler design which some people compare to the Garand (although i think it was more convergent evolution).
Even the MP43, which is the StG44 with another designation, was considered an SMG or a carbine.
