Originally developed just after WW1 in a program to modernise all infantry combat weapons of the French army,the MAS 38 was a further development of the MAS-35 (the direct product of the already mentioned program).The weapon took so long to actually finish development due to budgetary constraints of the French army.Less than 2000 were built before France surrendered,and the weapons were seized by Germany.They were supplied to Vichy France and to German units with the name MP722(f).
An important number of guns were later captured by Italian partisans,one of them was used by Walter Audisio to execute Mussolini in 1945

The fact that further production of the MAS 38 SMG during German occupation of France and even after WW2 is unknown but probably thousands more.
