I just placed a tiny cube high enough up on the model to make it .5 m tall and then created an alpha map that made all the faces of the cube invisible! It makes it difficult to select things as the hitcheck has to be at least the size of the model but it's a solution :).

May i ask how you did this? As i thought you couldn't do items smaller then 0.5m in a certain axis?
