Ross Rifle

A rifle developed by Sir Charles Ross for the Canadian military, the Ross is considered one of the biggest military equipment blunders in history. Based off the Mannlicher rifles and their straight-pull bolts, the first version of the Ross was noted as having more issues then moving parts. The Mk.II version was much more refined and became a popular target shooting rifle, with a third version made for the army and deployed during World War One. This Mk.III version proved to be problematic, as it was very sensitive to dirt entering the mechanism and jamming it. A much bigger issue surfaced when it was discovered that it was possible to assemble the bolt backwards. This caused the locking lugs to fail to engage, meaning that when the rifle was fired, the entire bolt assembly would be violently ejected backwards into the face of the user. Frequent jammings coupled with accidents that resulted in death or maiming of soldiers led most Canadian companies to trade their Rosses for British Enfield rifles. Despite this, Canadian snipers kept using it, partly due to it's superb accuracy and partly because they cleaned and assembled the rifle properly, preventing it from suffering from the issues that had plagued other users.

Huot Automatic Rifle

A machinegun developed for the Canadian armed forces by Joseph Huot, created by converting the Ross rifle into a fully-automatic weapon.
Despite the resulting weapon being ugly, having horrendous ergonomics and only capable of firing in full-auto, it was 20 times cheaper than the Lewis Gun, sturdy and reliable and was well received by the soldiers who used it.
The Canadian Army adopted the weapon and put an order for 5000 rifles.
However, the war ended before any of the weapons could be put into service. Of the 5 known to have been built, only 4 are known to still remain today
