anyone know how to use snacks?

im trying to figure out how to create/make/get soil to use to create snacks outside of forever shipments from kerbin. does anyone know if there is any type of how to or instructional or anything that might indicate what parts might be used for anything? ive found the information listed in ksp. but im hoping to find something with a little (aka A LOT) more detail.
