Whatever system they were using in ETW and NTW is in S2TW but it sadly doesn't seem to be functioning... there is a "regiment_names" file in the db database that seems to indicate hero units were supposed to be given names of individuals instead of generic names like "Yari Samurai Hero" but I've never seen a mod that was even able to get that to work, nevermind the old naming system where the player can manually input regiment names in-game. I agree it'd be a cool feature though.

Aye, I really miss that function from some of the other titles and it's a shame since STW is probably my favourite title in general.
