Let me pitch in then. 'Russkij' most probably comes from russian-french transcribtion rules as it was language of Russian nobility during XIX century. In fact Russian officers spoke french better then lots of actual french people during Napoleon war. Also even now Russia uses french transcribtion rules for names in passports or street signs etc.

"Russkijs"... interesting. Normally English-speakers such as myself just say 'russkiys' which sounds exactly the same as the Russian 'русский'. However, 'russkij' is exactly what you'd get from trying to type 'русский' on an AATSEEL keyboard, like my own, while still in English.
