I understand they might be common in a number of specific cities, but that doesn't make them common in the entire country. I live in a more rural province and I did not recognize these.
They must indeed be horizontally split apartments build into one house, I've heard of them but can't remember spotting one, silly that I didn't think about this.

jup this kind of housing is verry coment in the netherlands you will find them round amsterdam and utrecht

These are in Amsterdam. I'm assuming that they are flats.

I've never seen terrased housing with each house having two front doors, which city would have these and what are their purpose?
