If you wanna give it a try here are a few tips. First or all there is a widescreen hack for Spellforce 1 which gives you 16:9/16:10/21:9 resolutions. Just download the file and replace the exe file. (Link: http://www.wsgf.org/dr/spellforce-order-dawn/en) . Also there is a texture pack someone did like half a year ago. It replaces all the ground textures with very well made high res ones. I know Spellforce (and Spellforce 2) as pc games.
It's a mixture of rpg and rts where you have your group of heroes and depending of the mission just have them or minions in assition or can build a base to produce them.
I never finished the hame for now, but my brother did and really liked it. :)
I'd suggest: before buying it, take a look at some screens or a youtube video. Just to verify how the games aged graphically and to get a little feel for the type of gameplay.

I have never even heared of spellforce that I know of. o.o Is it good enough to justify getting a copy? Was it PC? Ps2? Totally unfamiliar.

It's not as interesting with the new steam workshop system AoE2 uses since 4.0 than it was before though.
