I haven't messed with particles in a while so I forget but you have to instance the particle, and then edit the particle definition. In there, I think you can find some sort of Move modifier thing? just play with some of the numbers on it and you should be able to get it working

I thought I had to photoshop out the effect from the original picture, but this particle saved me hours of work (and is also better looking in my opinion :p)
