add an item or command that stops them from attacking or makes them peaceful with the command especially at times when you just want to run away from an enemy
give them a function of "staying" where they never get out of place unless you give them command again maybe keeping them in the passive they stand like statues or sleeping and when placed in the normal temperament they become sentries or watchdogs

The power config option doesn't affect the normal hounds, only the puppies. I can set up something to configure their damage in the next update though. But this mod isn't really meant to let you fight without consequence or to build an army. As for the texture glitch, unfortunately I'm aware of it. Since this mod borrows bits from the base game's hound files, any time Klei updates the vanilla hounds it tends to break this a little.
Along with that, when the hounds deal damage, they deal extremely minor damage(10 to be exact), the worse of their fighting is that when you're trying to get away while the hounds fight the mobs, they end up losing attention or try to follow too closely with the mob following it. This is all very interruptive, and hard to work around with bosses, and hound attacks.
Also yes, I tried configurating the stats and didn't help with what they do. Plus they got this continual model glitch with the eyes when they are in certain camera positions, the eyes appear as a very dark grey.
