As long as they are only meant for the character that they replaces trey will work. The only reason why they say they are having an issue is because they share materials and textures.
Though even with the name in red it should still work. Give it a shot in a random campaign mission (That has Bill}
If you mean that the add-on turns red in the add-on menu then its either because the name change file is conflicting with other add-ons or that there is an add-on image that other addons have named the same name.
What do you mean when you say stack?

You have to download the addon and move it to your addons folder in your L4D2 folder.
An example would be....
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\addons
After finding the folder I recomeen making a shortcut to it on your desktop.
Yea I was working on him but then I got destracted and started working on something else. Though i believe there are Halo 3 Marines on gamemaps.com if your still looking.
Unfourtantly I don't have any of the Xbox one 3d models
