Time to do some learning I suppose, thanks for the response!
It's an iterative process. I set up a coloured/numbered grid as a "background" (search google images for "UV map grid"), and then I start to paint the camo blotches (each camo colour has its own layer) where I think they should go, check them in-game and estimate from the grid how far I need to adjust the blotches to make them align from hull to wings. I do this work in GIMP and use its Paths tool to define the perimeters of blotches - it's easy to stretch them around by their handles as I iterate towards alignment. Once blotches are aligned the "background" colour of the camo replaces the UV map grid.
When possible I use original camos as a guide - if I can identify where a blotch perimeter crosses a wing-to-hull boundary I'll try to make use of that point.
I've added the Hunter for WS's Ion faction to my D2X to-do list. I can't promise an ETA, but I will say that it will be an easy thing to do, since I have texture templates and config files for it already.
"Looking into" the CUP Datsun is added to my DVR to-do list. To be clear, I'm not committing to retexture it, just to investigate the possibility. See my "Roadmap" entry on the discussions tab, and bear in mind that I've already added a lot of LSVs and technicals to Ion in my D2X mod, thus CUP's Datsun is a low priority for me, regardless of how it might score in relation to my roadmap criteria.
