could you just edit the spawn rate? i managed to edit for myself editing the files but other players needs to do it when joinin my server and is a hassle

Hey! Sorry everyone, don't mean to be so far removed from this mod or my others. When the new build comes out I'm going to switch gears from Skyrim back to this game and dive DEEP into making sure this mod and my others are fully compatible.

I also have ideas on other mods, like one to make characters more bored the more you eat the same thing (take THAT cabbage lovers) and a mode to make clothing dry slower if it's layered. Appreciate everyone's patience!

Does this work in multiplayer?
We host a high-zed population server, and this mod seems cool - was requested by one of our players - but i'm worried that it will be too easy to find these. After killing 100 zombies (As in your example screenshots) getting that much skill from notes/books seems incredibly too easy. Can we adjust the drop rate as a server admin?

also changed the drop rates on sandbox option to 0.05 , since i believe the settings below are roll chance that uses the drop rate.
Maybe does nothing idk.

after opened with notepad i found this setting:

I just tested a few minutes and looks like there is less drop but if someone does try the change would be cool if can share results since any try requires a lot of load times and shit , thanks!

I found a bug where I can continuously spawn new magazines if I try to Read All. The game uses up the magazine I just read, converting it to useless paper, then spawns another magazine in my hands. With time sped up, you can easily level a skill to max with this bug. On top of the fact that I felt like too many magazines were spawning, I uninstalled this mod because of this bug.

I am really enjoying this mod as a way to reduce grind after playing so many runs. Would love to see the future plan of having literature for gun skills come to life. Fitness and strength would be nice too, but a little less immersive. There are body building and running magazines IRL, so maybe not too far fetched to learn stuff from reading something.

i set PSkillLiterature.ZedSpawnRate to 0.0 but there are still books spawning in corpses. does anyone have this problem as well?

For me it seems the mod works fully on 41.78, even sandbox ratios, and it's what I was looking for! I disable TV/VHS and use this mod as a complete replacement, thanks, this is a great mod, but it's a pity that it looks unmaintained..

Hey great mod but i seam to have an issue where it doesnt give me any xp any more it just says in the log that a recipe would be missing, but i can still like find item in world and do the action just dont get any xp so yeah would be just nice to know if this is an issue with the mod or an issue on my end

mod ignores configs for spawnrates, i changed spawns on zombs to 0 and still got like 50 pieces from 200 zeds

as others have suggested, this mod does what it's intended to but at massively high rates, a good baseline for in sandbox options spawn rates of inventories/zombies is roughly .04/.005 for balance reasons

the spawnrates are very high for these items! I really like this idea and it helps the scavager lifestyle but its abit overkill. not saying its OP but more of a hassle to handle all the item. I would like to see more rare items but more skill gain per! perhaps even sandbox options so we can edit it ourselfs! nice work

If you would like a suggestion on possibly reducing item amount, perhaps could only show up in 2 of the 3 forms, or possibly you could just ditch one of the forms blanketly.

I think some skill books on melee could make sense. It's not difficult to imagine that there are weapon martial art guides out there. For example, there are probably hema practitioners who have books or notes on how to properly handle and maintain their weapons as well as proper techniques on using them. I do prefer if these books have a limit of not expanding your skills beyond level 8. You can't possibly be a master chef or an expert marksman by just reading magazines and watching tv shows.

Really nice mod. Finally I can go and do something fun and useful instead of spending days upon days on mindless soul-crushing grind of another mechanic level or disassembling wooden crate #2307.

I see some people are concerned with drop rates and...it's a bit complicated. I set drop rate to 0.1 from containers and zombies both (idk if Lucky trait affects drops much) and I'm getting like 20+ magazines for 50 zombies on average. It looks like too much, but each magazine gives little XP, so it's actually nice and balanced.

What I'm suggesting is that maybe it's worth it to reduce drop rates, but proportionally increase XP from each magazine? It will make finding notes or magazines more impactful and remove the uneasiness from finding the whole stack of 3 magazines in every fourth zombie. Oh and it will reduce clutter, hauling 5 kilos of notes to your base after every loot trip is...not very fun.

The drop rate is fine for me. I think some people are too hardcore. idk if it has settings, but it's perfectly fine for me.

No apology needed, you're doing great.

Maybe could ask some other mod authors that have a bit of experience with spawnrates. That might be hard to do, but just a suggestion. Off the top of my head Undead Survivors has custom spawn rates for their special infected. They Knew has spawnrates for their custom hazmat zombie and configurable settings for the cure being on them.

Also Music for the end of the world, a submod of True Music lets you set custom spawnrates and modifiers for the cassettes/tapes. Hope any of this info is useful.

@Peppr So I think I may have come up with a solution. Because I can't - for the life of me - figure out the damn code for what the numbers really mean in procedural distribution. So I'm going to find a way to randomize it even spawning at all. Like, 50% chance it'll spawn, and if it does, 1% chance for a note, 0.5% for a mag, 0.25 for a book. Something like that, it's just tricky with the way the game's code is written.

I think the issue is that if I only had one kind of magazine, one kind of book, etc. it would show up as rare as it needs to. But given the sheer number of items (33) they show up a ton regardless.. I'm coming up with solutions, sorry it's bad haha, I'm still new at all this.

Ah i see people have been discussing this in the comments. I'm no modder so i can't offer any help, all i can say is the base chance for a magazine or note needs to be lowered by a good bit if possible. at least half.

I can't keep using the mod in it's current state. Despite enjoying the idea they simply spawn too much and take over the game. I can't go 30 seconds without seeing multiple copies.

what's the minimum spawnrate for these? using sandbox options i've got them set to 0.01 for zombie drops and world drops and im still getting them every other container and zombie kill.

I love the mod but they spawn way too much. will turning literature spawns down help? Currently on rare.

@SuperStar if you mean that you don't get an option to read the skill literature in the right-click context menu, remember that there is a minimum skill required to read the magazines (2+) and books (4+). You won't get an option to read one of them unless your skill is high enough. You can always read the notes however.

I'm very new at Zomboid modding, but I found the Java code which I believe picks items based on the procedural table (function rollProceduralItem in ItemPickerJava.java).

One thing I believe I see is that the weights are integers, not floats.

Also, I believe the weights are relative to each other, not a percentage. That means that within whatever category the game is rolling (e.g. ClassroomDesk, CrateTools etc), it gets all the table entries that are in that category, sums up their weights, generates a random number from 1 to the total weight, and then works out which item's weight range that random number falls into. So if you had 3 items with weights of 1, 2 and 3, it would generate a number from 1 to 6; a result of 1 would be the first item, 2-3 would be the second item, and 4-6 would be the third.

Hi! The "Skill Literature (Read)" items that these notes/magazines/journals convert into when you read them are consumables that *increase* your boredom by 15. I guess you could argue that it's boring to re-read something you already understand, but I wonder whether you meant to make them *decrease* boredom instead? As it is, you might as well just make the notes etc. vanish when they're read, like comics and unnamed books...
