its so dark at the begining, bed for eyes....and dead too much from archers..

There actually is a boss, which moves twice as fast as you, deals damage on contact and does about 30 dps. This map is obviously not balanced

Agreed with the others, good concept, but a swarm of high level archers, with 2 nests, behind a wall they can shoot from, at the end of a narrow corridor that expose you to a volley almost no matter what you do, without having any upgrades to your characters possible, that's not Dark Souls-esque, that's Kaizo-esque. The part after that were a lot more balanced in comparison

Okay. So I said the bad.

This is what I like: great assets, cool designs (the torch enemies were really interesting how they lit up the room), very creative, awesome level design, great easter eggs, unique bosses.

The bad: unavoidable damage, not optimized for all classes, encounter design is haphazard and nonsensical, game breaking glitches, poor telegraphing of attacks with bosses, damage increase combined with insane amount of enmies leads to frustrating and unfair difficulty (especially when playing lower health classes), completely botched difficulty curve, Overall, difficulty feels more frustrating and obnoxious rather than interesting. A lot of the game feels broken due to bizarre decisions in design, specifically when it comes to encounter design. Much of the game seems to be more about a battle of attrition than strategy and skill.

Clearly, alot of work went into this, but so much of it makes no sense. Why does the game start out with a series of rooms with hundreds of archers that all do 10 damage per arrow? How are you supposed to fight the pyromancer enemy without taking damage? What are his mechanics? How come he can just rocket towards you and just do an entire health pool of damage in seconds if he is even near you? Why is the attack animation for the first boss basically worthless with horrible collision and almost impossible to dodge at all? Why does he have zero frame attacks where if you are even close to him he will just do damage to you? Unavoidable damage! Why is the difficulty set so that so much of it is bullet hell nonsense? This is on medium too! The only way I could find to enjoy this is to turn on infinite lives, 5x mana regeneration, and play as a paladin and even then I can't even appreciate how cool the map is because I'm constantly saying "why did you design it like this!? I don't get it!"

It was clearly not designed with every class in mind, as it's near impossible to play as a wizard. I managed to get through the beginning with my least favorite class (paladin) and so far I hate it for the haphazard bullet hell hyper damage concept it seems to be going for. It clearly has neat elements at work here with the level design, but the encounter design is SO bad that I cannot stomach it. I honestly don't know if I'm missing something, or if it really is just this.

I adore how much the author recreated the look and feel of Dark Souls...but buddy, swarming areas with enemeis, spawns, and arrows is NOT the Dark Souls way. Thumbs down for all the bullshit enemies, sorry.

@TheDiamondKeeper: if you have subscribed, just go into the game and select custom map, HammerSouls will be there.
@Monstro: sup bro, the enemies are supposed to deal a lot of damage, that's why there aren't many at once (mostly, if I remember well). About getting lost after the Dragon, It's probably due to killing it before getting the plank. Sorry, it is a bug.

Hello, it's been 7 months since I last checked this page.

Known bugs are:
1) boss colisions blocking players;
2) plank not placing if Havel is killed after the Drake;
3) a couple of decals in wrong layers.

@Defetysta and dennis: yeah, I was able to reproduce this bug just now.
@Solar: the session in which I reproduced the bug mentioned above was done solo and with 2 deaths. Do you know how to moonwalk/strafe? Are you trying the hardest map in Hammerwatch on hard straight away? (Easy difficulty has no archer camping the start, just the spawners.)

The infinite clusterfuck of archers near the beginning is ridiculous for something so early and is impossible to beat without dying. There are several instances of unavoidable damage (the magnet man invader and Havel the AoE-mancer) and the enemies are Act II in difficulty level with your characters starting with nothing. I can't call this faithful to Dark Souls. This is a bullet hell map with a Dark Souls skin.

With starting health and no health upgrades available, this map isn't doable without at least the infinite lives crutch. If you like Dark Souls, this is a novel experience for the visuals, but it will probably wear on your nerves extremely quickly.

The author seems to have missed that the core of Dark Souls isn't its difficulty -- it isn't that hard of a game -- but the exploration and atmosphere. Vanilla Hammerwatch is more Souls-like than this map. I wanted to like the map going in, and the "Undead Burg" pop-up got me excited, but unfortunately I ended up disappointed.

There is a game-destroying bug. When you go to kill the drake and THEN go get the plank, you wont be able to place it and finish the game. I think this need to be fixed, I was running around for like 20 minutes from entrance to entrance and searching for a possible way to go.

Beat the Hellkite, Solaire told me to follow the light and I have the plank... But I can't seem to place the plank.. Anyone know why? How do I progress now?

Other than that- super solid map. Loved it. As a DS fan, this was insanely cool and I hope you continue to make more. 11/10

@Maska: In the bridge, next to the dragon, there is a message saying "Here!". After you defeat the dragon sparks of sunlight will glitter close to it, allowing the plank to be placed.
