Cannot get the other variants to work. Every time I start the game the other variants get deleted.

I guess replacing the main game's assets themselves is the only way to get them to work but that just makes the game more unstable. Or worst case scenario you'll get VAC banned for messing with the games files.

kind of funny that there are loads of mods now that add payday 2 outfits over the original L4D2 characters, but none (yet) that add the characters from payday 2 wearing said outfits.

no, you just need the base vpk + the reskin vpk both enabled

You just need the vpks of base mod (either this one or the alt versions with glasses and/or gloves) + your reskin of choice.
So, let's say that you're using THIS version of the mod right now (so not gloves or glasses), the next step would be to download the vpk which has the reskin you want to use, once you're done downloading it, simply move it to your addons folder and done.

No, but you can easily remove them yourself (you only need a tool able to unpack and repack VPKs such as Crowbar).

The custom script just posted is the one to blame there. The person behind it most likely modified the one from the left4dead2, which doesn't have the lines responsible for the arms of the l4d1 survivors to appear in first person.
